Prioritize Your Way To Success
Are you familiar with this scenario? You’ve got so many different tabs opened on your search engine that it just gives up on you and crashes? Not even your computer can handle so many tasks at once, and yet you feel confident that you’ll read every article, see every photo and read the novel in pdf while watching your favorite show.
The truth is, enthusiasm doesn’t get things done. Only getting things done gets things done. And if you’re stuck on so many different tasks that are of vital importance, and you can’t let any of them go… You’ll end up with a lot of time spent doing noting in particular. You’ll be exhausted and yet not a single task will be performed properly. Remember, all you’ve got are 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you want to be successful and get everything done, you’ll need to focus on one task at a time, and learn how to PRIORITIZE.
Now, I’m not talking about letting go of your personal life or your hobbies. By all means, if you learn a bit more about time management, you’ll be able to do everything you want done and keep it classy, with high quality. What I’m referring to when I talk about prioritizing is differentiating between urgent and less urgent matters. If you learn how to make a proper to-do list, and how to tell which tasks are urgent and which ones can wait, you’ll end up getting everything done in due time.
Remember, the fact that certain tasks are not too urgent does not mean you can postpone dealing with them indefinitely. It only means you can deal with them on more then one occasion. For example, if you don’t get around to completing it on Monday, you’ll be able to postpone it until Thursday. Here’s what you should do if you want a realistic to-do list:
• Remember to put your leisure time and your work-related responsibilities on your to-do list. You need to finish that project, sure. But you also need to wash your hair. And get enough sleep. And maybe meet up with friends and unwind. Remember, you’re not a machine. If you want to be efficient and productive, you also need to be well-rested. This is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’re serious about your work, you need to save energy.
• Make sure you know where your priorities lie. Don’t write a plan every day. Write it every week, and make sure you know which tasks are more important or more urgent than others. Once you differentiate between things that need to be done ASAP and the ones that can be postponed, you’ll be able to plan your week properly. But remember, this does not mean that you get to postpone your less urgent responsibilities endlessly. You’ll simply have core to-does for every day of the week, the ones that cannot be left out. Then, you’ll have the less relevant tasks that you’ll juggle, but you’ll only start dealing with these once your other responsibilities are done and over with.
